Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI)
Our vision is to be clear, open, and fair to everyone in all that we do, ensuring effective engagement with the diversity of people standing to gain from, use, or enable our research outcomes. We aim to advance clarity, openness, and fairness in all our interactions.
Our EDI Strategy

The NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion across our workforce, research participants, and public contributors, guided by a BRC-CRF joint EDI strategy.
We conducted a workforce survey as part of the EDI strategy. Among its findings, it highlighted how staff feel NIHR partnerships must support career progression across different demographic groups.

Southampton Centre for Research Engagement and Impact
We want our research to be fair, inclusive, and reflective of our region’s diversity across research participants, public contributors, and research teams. The Southampton Centre of Research Engagement and Impact (SCREI) based at University Hospital Southampton is dedicated to achieving this.
SCREI is working across our centres and units to improve:
-
Measures of diversity and indicators of inclusion
-
Researcher training in awareness and inclusion
-
How we do studies and support participants
-
Inclusivity of research careers and working
-
Accessibility - digital, print, physical and linguistic
SCREI can advise you on many aspects of EDI in research:
-
Equity Impact Assessments in study design
-
Understanding and reaching specific or under-served groups
-
Training and supporting teams in developing their EDI
-
Monitoring and tracking diversity
For EDI support from SCREI, email researchedi@uhs.nhs.uk. For nationwide assistance, contact the NIHR Research Inclusion team at researchinclusion@nihr.ac.uk.
