Gavin manages the laboratory component of our NIHR Clinical Research Facility, leading our team of skilled technicians in providing high quality sample processing with precise documentation.


Gavin is the laboratory manager for both the NIHR Clinical Research Facility and Anti Microbial Resistance laboratories and is responsible for ensuring that the facility laboratory team is able to process clinical trial samples according to study specific protocols to high clinical standards. Gavin is involved in the day-to-day running of the laboratory arm of the facility, providing expertise to researchers planning studies and working with the facility management team to assess study feasibilities and associated costs. He ensures that all laboratory work is performed according to GCP and is carried out to an MHRA auditable standard.


Gavin is an active member of the UK Clinical Research Facility Network laboratory managers group, providing expertise and advice to other laboratory managers across the network.


Gavin began his career in research working on epithelial and haematological malignancies including mantle cell lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia and multiple myeloma. One of his key publications being Immunoglobulin heavy chain locus events and expression of activation-induced cytidine deaminase in epithelial breast cancer cell lines. 2006 (Babbage G, Ottensmeier CH, Blaydes J, Stevenson FK, Sahota SS.) being the first evidence of a mutational molecule previously reported as only being present in B-cells.
